As civil unrest spread in the wake of the homicide of George Floyd, a faculty member at Weber State University tweeted, from his personal Twitter account, support of a police officer who beat a Wall Street Journal reporter. After some of the faculty member’s other tweets supporting violence against rioters and criticism of Rep. Ilhan Omar surfaced, the university announced it was initiating an investigation. On June 2, 2020, FIREwrote to the university calling for an end to the investigation into the professor’s protected speech.
