Case Overview

On February 25, 2025, the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville announced an investigation into Dr. Mobeen Rathore for social media posts critical of Israel and Israeli military action in Gaza. After local news outlets published stories about the posts, UF announced it would investigate whether the posts “fall outside of free speech protections applicable to public employees or violate state or federal law or university policies or regulations.” FIREwrote UF on March 12, explaining why the investigation violates Rathore’s First Amendment rights, as the posts in question do not fall into any category of unprotected expression.
