Tulsa City-County Library: Library suspends patron for protected speech, maintains unconstitutional public comment rules

Cases

Case Overview

In June 2024, Tulsa City-County Library staff confronted a patron talking to a teenage library volunteer about the transgender pride symbols in the library. Staff told the patron she should not be in the children’s section, should not be talking to a minor about “politics,” should not talk about her views, and may not film with her phone in the library. Ultimately, the library suspended her. Additionally, the library maintains unconstitutional restrictions on the public comment portion of commission meetings.

On January 21, 2025, FIREwrote to the library commission urging it to rectify the library’s numerous constitutional violations.
