Santa Clara University: Student Government Rejects Turning Point USA Chapter Over Its Political Stances
Cases
Santa Clara University
Case Overview
In a February 2, 2017 meeting, the Santa Clara University (SCU) Associated Student Government (ASG) rejected recognition status for a prospective Turning Point USA (TPUSA) chapter on the basis of the group’s political stances and potential ties to the national TPUSA organization. The next day, TPUSA’s members were told by an ASG Senator that if TPUSA were to attempt to gain recognition next semester, its members should consider renaming the group the “Free Trade Club.” In a February 17 letter, FIREcalled on SCU to reconsider ASG’s viewpoint-based rejection of TPUSA and uphold the university’s commitments to the freedoms of speech and association. On March 3, 2017, Vice Provost of Student Life Jeanne Rosenberger reversed ASG’s decision and granted recognition to the chapter.
