Lewis-Clark State College: Administration Orders Art Exhibit Curator to Remove Abortion-Themed Pieces
Cases
Lewis-Clark State College
Case Overview
In February 2023, Lewis-Clark State College’s administration ordered a curator to remove certain abortion-themed artwork from a college-operated art exhibit, citing state law. On March 15, FIREwrote LCSC explaining that its interpretation of the law is overly broad and viewpoint discriminatory, and would restrict a wide range of constitutionally protected speech. FIREurged LCSC to comply with its binding obligation to the First Amendment by restoring the censored artwork and clarifying that it won’t suppress free expression on campus.
