Case Overview

For the second time in two years, Hampton University denied official recognition to students seeking to start a gay and lesbian group on campus. After the group, FIREPromoting Equality, Action and Knowledge (SPEAK), was denied recognition on December 20, 2006, it contacted ÃÛÖÏãÌÒ. FIREwrote a letter to Hampton urging the university to fulfill its promise of  equal treatment to students by recognizing SPEAK or providing an adequate explanation for effectively banning the group from campus for the next two years.  Hampton did not respond to ÃÛÖÏãÌÒ’s letter. However, in 2016, Hampton finally recognized its first official LGBTQ student organization, MOSAIC.
