In September 2017, police at George Washington University launched an investigation into posters lampooning a conservative student organization by purporting to promote an event the group had conducted a decade earlier. The posters, depicting a “typical Muslim” as having lasers emanating from their eyes and a “peg-leg for smuggling children and heroin,” satirized the conservative group’s criticism of Islam by suggesting that the organization hates Muslims. On September 12, 2017, FIREwrote to the university, calling for an end to the investigation into the anonymous satirist. The university failed to respond.
