Clallam County, Washington: Proposal to limit speech of commissioners speaking in their personal capacities
Cases
Case Overview
FIRE Victory closed
On April 3, the Bylaws Committee of the Clallam County Charter Review Commission approved a motion to amend the commission’s bylaws to prohibit commissioners — when speaking publicly, even in their personal capacities — from identifying individuals who have made public comments at CRC meetings. On April 14, FIREwrote the full commission explaining the amendment would violate the First Amendment by restricting speech on public issues and calling on the commission to reject the change. Later that evening, the commission voted down the bylaws amendment.
