Case Overview
On January 6, the Bangor City Council voted to authorize the city attorney to bring charges against anyone “involved in statements that have caused harm to the City.” The city attorney later clarified that he would only take action against “knowingly false” statements about the City. On February 24, FIREwrote the city council explaining that the First Amendment completely bars government entities from suing for defamation and calling on the council to reverse its decision.
