UC Berkeley Should Commemorate the âFree Speech Movementâ By Becoming a âGreen Lightâ School
This year, the University of California, Berkeley is the 50th anniversary of the â,â which emerged in 1964 to protest UC Berkeleyâs ban of on-campus political activities. However, the 50th anniversary isnât until this fall, so UC Berkeley administrators still have plenty of time to make the event even more significant by revising the universityâs speech-restrictive policies and becoming a âgreen lightâ institution. FIREcurrently gives UC Berkeley a âyellow lightâ rating, meaning it maintains ambiguous policies that allow arbitrary application and administrative abuse.
