Central Washington University Hosts First Amendment Festival

Liberty Sign -

This week, Central Washington University will  freedom of expression with presentations and interactive events open to the public. The line-up includes speeches by civil rights advocates, student reenactments of famous First Amendment cases, and a live musical performance at the end of the week. As The Daily Record reports, students and visitors are encouraged to get into the full spirit of the week "by writing on a free speech wall or making their own protest sign on the [Student Union and Recreation Center] east and west patios."

This is a great opportunity for CWU students and surrounding community members to learn more about their First Amendment rights, and to have some frank and open discussions among themselves about various issues.

It looks like CWU has come a long way since 2008, when it tried to silence students speaking out on immigration issues. FIREwould love to help CWU put its attitude toward free speech on the record by assisting the school in revising its speech codes! As always, we stand at the ready for schools that want to make the change.

Check out the full  of events for the weeklong celebration at The Daily Record.
