On June 23, 2022, the Department of Education released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would revise Title IX regulations. The revision threatens student free speech and due process rights. FIREurges the Department of Education to revise its proposal to respect student rights, and we will consider all our options to preserve those rights — up to and including legal action.
FIRE’s Legislative and Policy Program promotes legislation and policy that protects our right to freedom of speech, while combating measures that would restrict the exercise of that crucial right.

FIRE supports legislation that promotes fair and reliable non-academic campus disciplinary hearings on college campuses. We also work with policymakers to defeat measures that would further undermine fundamental fairness and to promote those that ensure that the campus judiciary provides meaningful due process protections to students accused of infractions.
Religious liberty is one of the essential qualities of individual liberty and dignity. That is why FIREsupports legislation that ensures that college students of faith have the same rights to campus resources as other students. FIREopposes policies that would prohibit students from forming belief-based organizations that require their members and leaders to adhere to the organization’s beliefs and promotes policies that protect diversity through pluralism.
