Bullying: Ongoing and deliberate patterns of negative behavior from an individual, group or student organization. Bullying is behavior that includes but is not limited to intimidating language, belittling gestures or demeaning communication. Behavior that is directed towards another student, group, student organization, faculty or staff member, or other campus partner that has or can be reasonably perceived to have the effect of one or more of the following:
- Causing a substantially detrimental effect on the individuals physical or mental health, and/or
- Substantially interfering with the individual’s academic performance; and/or
- Substantially interfering with the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by or related to NIU.
Cyber-Bullying: Cyber-bullying is defined as bullying made in writing, through the use of technology or any electronic communication, including but not limited to transfer of signs, text messages, signals, writing, images, sounds, data, or intelligence of any nature transmitted in whole or in part by a wire, radio, electromagnetic system, photoelectronic system, or photo-optical system, including without limitation electronic mail, internet communications, instant messages, or continuous, perpetual communications to a person or individual. Cyber-bullying also includes but is not limited to the creation of a webpage or weblog in which the creator impersonates another person as the author of posted content or messages. Cyber-bullying may include behavior that is directed toward another student, group, student organization, faculty or staff member, or other campus partner that has or can be reasonably perceived to have the effect of one or more of the following:
- Causing a substantially detrimental effect on the individuals physical or mental health, and/or
- Substantially interfering with the individual’s academic performance; and/or
- Substantially interfering with the individual’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by or related to NIU.
