On April 26, 2024, Twin Ridge Elementary School in Mt. Airy, Maryland sent an email to staff stating that students and staff were required to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance. On May 30, FIREwrote the school explaining the First Amendment and Maryland law protect both staff and students from being compelled to participate in the Pledge and urged the school to issue a corrected directive. On May 31, the school sent a corrected directive to staff, and on June 4, Frederick County Public Schools responded to FIREstating that a directive was also sent county-wide to all school administrators.
