Orange Coast College: Administrators Demand Removal of Student Group’s Pro-Second Amendment Flags
Cases
Orange Coast College
Case Overview
On February 21, 2019, FIREwrote to Orange Coast College over allegations that administrators censored the flags a student group displayed at a February 12 campus recruitment event. The group, Young Americans for Freedom, reported that administrators demanded they remove from their display two flags supporting the Second Amendment on the basis that they violated a policy restricting weapons and dangerous objects. ÃÛÖÏãÌÒ’s letter asked the college to clarify its staff members’ reported involvement and to confirm that its students’ First Amendment rights will not be violated again. Orange Coast responded to the letter, explaining that it had already apologized, taken steps to remedy the incident, and was taking steps to protect speech moving forward.
